This introductory foods unit is designed to introduce students to all areas of basic food preparation techniques —cookies, quickbreads, pies, eggs, nutritious snacks, etc. Safety and equipment in the kitchen area are reviewed. The clothing unit is designed to introduce the student to basic sewing techniques. The use of the sewing equipment is also studied. Basic needlecraft techniques will be taught.
Homemaking and Consumer Economics II

Basic Clothing/Crafts
Basic clothing construction is for the student with little or no experience in sewing. General principles of working with a pattern, fabric, and the use of the sewing machine are stressed. Basic seams and seam finishes will be taught, as well as the development of good work habits. The crafts component of the course is designed to develop a sense of pride and achievement. The student is encouraged to learn new stitchery skills for home or personal adornment. Needlepoint, candle wicking counted cross-stitch are all possible choices for selection. The student will be asked to create a project of his/her own after learning the basic skill.
Beginning Foods
This is an introductory unit in food preparation. Stress will be placed on baking techniques (cakes, pies, breads, etc.), hot weather meals, use and care of equipment in the kitchen, diet and nutrition, and a variety of methods of serving foods. After gaining ease in reading and following a recipe, the student should confidently enjoy food preparations.
Home and Consumer Economics III - 5 credits
Clothing Construction
Stress will be made on general principles of working with a pattern, fabric, and the use of a sewing machine. Advanced seam finishes will be taught, as well as the development of good work habits. Students will learn to perfect their sewing skills.
Foreign Foods
International and regional cookery is designed to increase skills in food preparation while fostering an understanding of the eating habits of U.S. regions and other countries of the world. In developing an awareness of the importance of nutrition and the role of the cultures, holidays, and food service of other lands will be discussed, meals planned and foods served from various countries around the world.
Child Care and Development
This unit is designed to give better understanding of the development and care of a child. Emphasis will be on the child from pre-natal development through age six. The importance of the mother's nutritional awareness and the forming of good eating habits during the child-bearing time will be emphasized as well as an understanding of the baby's needs.

Clothing Construction
Stress will be made on the general principles of working with a pattern, fabric and the use of a sewing machine. Basic seams and seam finishes will be taught, as well as the development of good work habits. Students will learn to perfect their sewing skills and develop techniques in the use of interfacing and hand stitching.
Meal Planning
This unit is designed for the student to increase skill in planning, preparing, and serving complete meals for the family. Emphasis will be placed on the preparation and the use of different cuts of meat and their cost. Consumer economics will be emphasized here. Students will learn how to create attractive tables, develop methods of serving and selecting foods to serve for various occasions. The student will be actively involved in the planning and preparing of food for special occasions such as: desserts for the holidays, Thanksgiving dinner, etc.
Independent Life Skills
This unit is designed to develop an understanding of evolution, habits, and function of the American family today. Emphasis is placed upon attaining maximum quality of home and family life for each individual. It is hoped that students will learn to understand themselves, will live happily as family members and will develop an increasing sense of family and community responsibilities. The students will also discuss and understand the aspects of planning and preparing for marriage.
