February is Black History Month. The Black Student union wants you to know about Henrietta Lacks... an African American woman whose cells, known as HeLa cells, were taken without her consent in 1951 during cancer treatment. These cells had a unique ability to continuously grow and divide outside the human body, making them invaluable for medical research. HeLa cells contributed to major scientific advancements, including the development of vaccines, cancer treatments, and even space research. Lacks' story raised ethical questions about medical consent and patient rights. Today, her legacy is recognized for both its scientific impact and the ongoing fight for ethical medical practices. Today's Black History moment was brought to you by the Black Student Union.
