Teacher: Mr. Gregory Mills
Course Description: Biology is devoted to the study of living things and their processes. Throughout the year this course provides an opportunity for students to develop scientific process skills, laboratory techniques, and an understanding of the fundamental principles of living organisms. Students in this class will learn about Biological Principles, Cells, Biochemistry, DNA, Genetics, Evolution, Classification, and Ecology. Students will be required to use higher levels of reasoning through application, interpretation, experimentation, problem solving and analysis of concepts. Students will explore fields related to biology and possible career options. They will also learn to be more capable problem-solvers and logical thinkers with a greater appreciation for living things and their interaction with the world around them.
Teach students practical scientific skills, which they can use to investigate, study, and explain the world around them.
Give students a deeper understanding of how biology impacts their daily lives.
Encourage the spirit of scientific investigation and with it the attitudes of accuracy in thought and work.
Build study skills and literacy skills in reading and writing in the content area.
The focus of the Chromebook program at Hanover Park High School is to provide tools and resources for the 21st century learner. Excellence in education requires that technology is seamlessly integrated throughout the educational curricula. The individual use of Chromebooks is a way to empower students to maximize their full potential and to prepare them for college and the workplace. During the class period, students are responsible for the general care of the Chromebook which they have been assigned for their Biology Course. Students are not allowed any food or drink near their Chromebook while it is in use. In addition, students must adhere to the Hanover Park Electronic Use Policy for appropriate use of the Chromebook. Any behavior that does not comply with the district regulations will be referred to Mr. Silva for disciplinary action.
Keys for Success in Biology:
Have a positive attitude!
I am here to help you succeed, so feel free to ask me for help.
Keep clear and complete notes that you understand. Do not simply copy notes blindly without thought of comprehension or understanding.
Ask questions. If you are unclear about something from the textbook, lab, or from discussion, ask!
Make sure that you understand how the lecture, homework, and labs interrelate. Labs and homework are designed to reinforce significant ideas from the text. Make sure that you see these connections.
Start studying for tests early. By studying and reviewing each night you are not only helping to prepare for the tests more effectively, you are also more prepared for class each day.
